NFF: The Price Is the Point
The frontier got cheaper this week. That, not the benchmark sweep, is the story.
THE SIGNAL
Claude Fable 5 shipped at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output. Less than half the cost of the frontier tier that preceded it.
The capability that matters sits under the benchmark charts: the lead widens as tasks get longer and more complex. Long-horizon, multi-step work is where this model separates.
That is a different claim from scoring higher. The work you used to break into small pieces can now stay whole.
THE NOISE
The coverage leads with state of the art on nearly every benchmark. Coding, vision, finance, research. A clean sweep.
Benchmark sweeps are the easy story to write. They are also the least useful one for anyone deciding what to build on Monday. A leaderboard does not tell you what just became affordable.
THE REFRAME
AI is affordability, not invention.
Long-horizon reasoning existed at the frontier for months. It was gated behind a price and an access tier only large teams could justify. This release moved the gate. It did not invent the capability.
That is the pattern. Every Mythos-class release reads as a capability story and lands as a cost story. The builders who win read the second one.
The model is not the moat. What you build on top of it is.
THE BUILD
One detail for anyone on the API: Fable falls back to Opus 4.8 on flagged topics, in under 5 percent of sessions. You are architecting against two models, not one. Test your complex path against both before you ship.
For Porch, the reasoning layers I had deferred as too expensive to run at volume moved from later to this week. Affordability is a build trigger, not a press release.
THIS WEEK’S NFF SCORE
🟢 Signal: The price cut on long-horizon work is the actual release.
🔴 Theater: The benchmark-sweep headline performs capability while burying the cost story.
🟡 Noise: The “this changes everything” reflex greets every launch and explains none of them.

Affordability commoditizes capability. Coordination creates enduring value.
